Chinese within English

I have a really hard time keeping track of who's doing what in the Shiji chaper about Hsiung-nu. The main reason is that I cannot understand those Chinese names. Whenever I see the names appearing in the passage, I have the tendency of translating them back into Chinese (this way, it's easier for me to keep track). However, those Chinese names are not translated in Mandarin pinyin (which I think is the easiest to understand). I try to reada them in Cantonese but it doesn't work... So I really wonder how did the editor translate those Chinese names within the passage... See, here's another example of defamiliarization: I am defamiliarized by the English Chinese names...

Maybe I should just treat them as foreign names.
